Chantal Shop on Hastings Street Napier New Zealand.jpg

founders peter alexander and maureen ward

opened Chantal Shop on Hastings Street in Napier. In the late seventies they had joined a whole food co-op, and in 1983, along with another couple from the co-op they took the plunge.

Pete and Maureen bought out their partners a couple of years later, and ran the business until 2016. In that time they had expanded to include a large production warehouse employing 50 people, food production of over 1000 products under the Chantal Organics brand, and started several thriving organic gardens.

In 2016 daughter Tess, and son-in-law Tim took part ownership along with organic food store Huckleberry.

Tess and Tim’s vision for taking the store forward is to keep nourishing the locals of Hawkes Bay with affordable wholefoods and organics. To introduce young families to the benefits of raising kids on an organic diet, which they hope will instill lifelong health.

Peter is still a daily figure in the store as he delivers produce from his organic orchard and gardens, and Maureen can still be found in the shop on the weekends.

Chantal Shop is a local institution, and we owe our success to all our fabulous customers. A huge heartfelt thank you to you all, and here’s to the next 38 years!
